Who am I?
To grow them is my real test, to train them is my cause. Yes, I’m talking about my calves. Hi. My name is Naithrav and I’m on a lifelong quest to consume more protein. I am a tennis coach moonlighting as a strength and conditioning coach (S&C)/ certified personal trainer. Ever since I picked up a racquet when I was five, I wanted to be involved in the sport. It truly felt like a low-budget muggle version of Harry Potter picking up his wand at Ollivander’s shop. Growing up I played several sports and would always take the concept of play seriously. I was a good student academically but any time not spent playing (not just tennis) was wasted time in my opinion. I have always been interested in subjects like psychology, philosophy and pedagogy and my reading habits which include books by Richard Feynman, Norman Doidge, Jordan Peterson and several other auto/biographies reflect this. As a player, I had a propensity for getting injured and that began my tryst with understanding the human body. I took it upon myself to become more informed and the value I hope to provide is to leave the player more knowledgeable than when they walked in.
Why I write?
As a player, the scientific skeptic in me would always question everything that didn’t satisfy me, only to obtain wishy-washy and unsatisfactory answers. Furthermore, it was disconcerting to see the disconnect between the tennis coach and the S&C coach, with me having to play a balancing act between their often contradictory recommendations. As someone who wears two hats, I hope to be the single point of contact for a player. In an age where social media has made it easy to proliferate information regardless of its veracity, my aim is to disseminate information with empirical backing. Writing serves to reaffirm whatever little I know and encourages me to think critically.
